Quiet Stillness

Winter has finally arrived in Michigan, with a vengeance. Yesterday, I had the singularly unpleasant experience of my alarm clock going off not once, not twice, but three times as my power pulsed on and off. Once nature made a decision to permanently disconnect power from my house, I went back to sleep. Afterall, there was no point in getting up – my car was trapped inside the garage.
However, a girl can’t sleep forever. Although it was seriously considered for many minutes. My husband was worried that I would be too cold before he could get home to start the gas heaters. Go ahead . . . laugh. I did. I’m a knitter – we know how to stay warm.  Does he think the hanks of yarn I have squirreled throughout the house are merely decoration?  I was snug and cozy in a fair isle sweater, a scarf, and my socks.  Â
Besides a free day of knitting, I enjoyed the stillness. Even when it is quiet, there is the electronic hum of the refridgerator, the buzz of light bulbs, the general sound of things plugged in. With the power off, the silence was almost tangible. The click of my needles seemed to echo in the quiet. I imagined that someone in some earlier time had enjoyed this type of quiet in their everyday life. Their needles the only sound to be heard.

ahh, i love that type of stillness…enjoy!
